I bought my airline ticket for my Appalachian Trail thru-hike the other day. It’s hard to believe it is only 30-days until I start my hike. 29-days until I fly out of Los Angeles and head to Atlanta. I decided to fly out of Burbank Airport instead of Los Angeles Airport (LAX) since it’s the closest airport to my folk’s place. I can easily Uber to the airport if I need to since my flight leaves at 6:50 am. I don’t expect my mom to drive me to the airport to catch a flight at that time of day.
The flights out of Burbank Airport are more expensive than LAX, but I save in other ways. Getting to Burbank Airport is far less expensive than going to LAX. But, most importantly, Burbank Airport is close by and smaller, so I can sleep in later! Hey, I’m going to be living out of my tent, trail shelters, hostels, etc. for the next five to six months, I want to enjoy my last night indoors while I can.
My airline ticket was $129, which I don’t think is too bad. That, of course, doesn’t include the $30 checked baggage fee, so all told it’s costing me $159 to fly to Atlanta, Georgia. Heck, it was $197 on Greyhound which takes over 2-days, and $210 on Southwest Airlines! So, it’s $129 on American Airlines out of Burbank Airport for me. The only downside is there aren’t direct flights to Atlanta out of Burbank Airport, so I do have a layover in Phoenix, but I can live with that.
My only concern is the layover in Phoenix, which is only 40 minutes so I am worried about my luggage making the connecting flight. I guess the worst case would be it makes a later flight. I am hoping everything goes well and that doesn’t happen as it would mean spending the night in a hotel and I’d rather not spend that money right away. Hey, I’ve got to make my money stretch as far as possible…
Of course, getting to Atlanta is only part of the journey to get to the Appalachian Trailhead, but I’ll leave that for my next blog post.
